Abstract

Phytochemical screening and antibacterial activities of Allium cepa bulb and Allium sativum bulb extracts was investigated and compared. Analysis of data confirms that antibacterial activity was maximum at 50 μg/ml of Allium cepa bulb and Allium sativum bulb ethanolic extract against Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus pumilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared with 50 μg/ml of ciprofloxacin standard. These results suggest that both ethanolic extracts of Allium cepa bulb and Allium sativum bulb have similar potent antibacterial activity due to the presence of flavonoids.
