Abstract:

Two medicinal plants extracts traditionally used in Kenya mainly for the management of infectious conditions were chosen and screened for their antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis and gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus). Antibacterial activity was tested using disc diffusion method. Dichloromethane, hexane, methanol and ethanol extracts of A. setaceous and C. volkensii showed activity against the bacteria. These organic extracts showed minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) against the tested bacteria with mic ranging from 6.25-50mg/ml.
